Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) was an Austrian Symbolist painter, known for his highly decorative and erotic works. He was a leading figure in the Vienna Secession movement, which sought to break away from traditional academic art and embrace new, more experimental approaches.

The Virgin is a magnificent and colorful painting that depicts a group of young women caught in a kind of dreamlike swirl of fabric, patterns, and bodies. At the center lies a young woman (the "virgin" referred to in the title), surrounded by other female figures who seem to float around her in a circular, almost cosmic arrangement.
The figures are sensuously intertwined and enveloped in typical Klimt patterns — flowers, spirals, and abstract forms — making it difficult to clearly distinguish where one body ends and another begins. This gives the painting a sense of both transition and metamorphosis.
