Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen (1859–1923) was a Swiss-born French Art Nouveau painter and printmaker known for his depictions of Parisian life, especially of cats. One of his most famous works is the iconic Le Chat Noir poster, created in the 1890s for the Montmartre cabaret Le Chat Noir (The Black Cat), a popular bohemian nightclub founded by Rodolphe Salis. The poster features a striking black cat with an arched back and glowing eyes, set against a bold yellow and red background, exemplifying the Art Nouveau style.
Steinlen’s Le Chat Noir has become one of the most recognizable vintage posters, symbolizing the artistic and cabaret culture of late 19th-century Paris.
